Nalbandian and Ferrer through easily in Japan
10/4/11 2:20 PM | Cheryl Murray
David Nalbandian and David Ferrer put in a light day at the office with routine wins at the Rakuten Japan Open.
David Ferrer (3) def. Kei Nishikori 6-4, 6-4
This first-round match between David Ferrer and Kei Nishikori was a study in service breaks and break-point chances. Spain’s Ferrer is one of the best returners in the men’s game, but his serve is not of particular consequence. Nishikori, the hometown favorite in Tokyo, had some chances on Ferrer’s serve (seven total in the match), but he couldn’t convert on enough of them to make a difference.
Ferrer had a bit of a rusty start, but once he found his groove on Nishikori’s serve the Japanese man had no answers. Nishikori earned a 0-40 opportunity on Ferrer’s serve in the second set, but the Spaniard held him off to win in straights. Ferrer will play Matthew Ebden of Australia in the second round.
David Nalbandian def. Lukas Rosol 6-1, 6-1
Argentina’s David Nalbandian completely destroyed Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic in his first-round match. The Argentine lost only six points on serve, he faced no break points, and he won in just 49 minutes. Rosol’s day was so dismal that he failed to win even half the points on his own serve.
This impressive win sends Nalbandian into the second round, where he will take on Croat Ivan Dodig.
