10/6/11 2:23 PM | Cheryl Murray
No. 2 seed Andy Murray and Argentine veteran David Nalbandian found their way into the Tokyo quarterfinals.
Andy Murray (2) def. Alex Bogomolov Jr.6-1, 6-2
With each win in Asia, Andy Murray gets closer to knocking Roger Federer out of the No. 3 spot. The Scot is less than a thousand points away – and Federer is taking the Asian swing off to rest. Murray made a strong statement of intent with his win over American Alex Bogomolov on Thursday.
Their match lasted 58 minutes, with Murray holding Bogomolov to just three games. The Scot served well, with 11 aces and a sturdy 63% first serve percentage. Murray didn’t face a single break point as he bullied the American around the court. Murray will take on David Nalbandian in the quarters.
David Nalbandian def. Ivan Dodig 7-6(2), 6-2
The fall indoor season has traditionally been David Nalbandian's time to shine. He had a particularly impressive run in 2007, which netted him Masters titles in both Paris and Madrid. He defeated Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic along the way.
Nalbandian appears to be peaking post-US Open again. After a disappointing summer hard-court swing, the Argentine is back in the quarterfinals again.
His win over Ivan Dodig wasn't complete domination, but Nalbandian weathered 14 aces and three service breaks from the Croat.
