France’s Gilles Simon had to work hard for his 3-set victory over Yen-Hsun Lu, while Jarkko Nieminen advanced in 2 tight sets.
Gilles Simon def. Yen-Hsun Lu 6-7(4), 7-5, 6-4
Taiwan’s Yen-Hsun Lu had a real opportunity to close this match out in straight sets. Lu and Simon traded breaks in the first with the Tiawanese man just edging Simon in the tiebreaker. Lu continued to keep his nose in front of Simon in the second set. Lu had a game point on his own serve to go ahead 5-2, but he couldn’t get it done.
Simon broke for 4-3, and then again when Lu served to force a tiebreaker. Simon finally got a foothold in Lu’s serve in the third set. The Frenchman earned himself 5 break points. Lu played well to stave off 4 of them, but Simon converted one of them for the match.
Simon will take on Germany’s Matthias Bachinger in the quarterfinals.
Jarkko Nieminen def. Robin Haase (7) 7-6(5), 7-6(4)
This was an up-and-down match with both men taking in turns to get ahead only to lose the lead. Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen drew first blood in the opening set with a break of Robin Haase’s serve. The Dutchman got the break back to force a tiebreaker. Haase got the first minibreak, but he couldn’t hold onto it.
The second set began with a series of service breaks, with unforced errors abounding from both players. Nieminen took advantage of a weak tiebreaker from Haase to secure the win.
Nieminen will take on the winner of Gael Monfils and Santiago Giraldo.
