Young advances, Gulbis upset in Bangkok
9/27/11 6:56 PM | Cheryl Murray
Donald Young continued the success of his breakout summer with a first-round win over Russia’s Igor Andreev when the Russian retired in the second set.
Donald Young def. Igor Andreev 7-6(6), 2-1 (ret.)
Things were not all bad for Igor Andreev in this first-round match. The Russian was well-positioned a number of times to go ahead in the first set, but he couldn’t hold onto his serve long enough to make it stick. Young held himself together through the tiebreaker to just edge out the one-set lead.
American Young was up an early break in the second set when Andreev was forced to retire. The win sends Young into the second round, where he will take on Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
Simone Bolelli def. Ernests Gulbis 7-6(5), 7-6(5)
It was another first-round loss for Ernests Gulbis, his eighth of the 2011 season. The Latvian, who is ranked No. 47 in the world, had a few strong results on the hard courts, but he appears to be back playing inconsistent tennis again.
Simone Bolelli of Italy struck the ball well. He weathered 19 aces from the racket of Gulbis, while tossing in 10 of his own. Gublis did well to keep up with Bolelli during both sets, though the Italian appeared to be out-playing him for the most part.
Bolelli was just able to nab both tiebreaks from Gulbis to advance to the second round, where he will take on Grigor Dimitrov.
