Murray and Monfils into the quarters in Bangkok
9/29/11 6:46 PM | Cheryl Murray
Tournament top seeds Andy Murray and Gael Monfils won their second round matches as the PTT Thailand Open looks ahead to the quarterfinals.
Andy Murray (1) def. Michael Berrer 6-4, 6-2
Andy Murray seemed to come ready to play in Bangkok. The Scot, who is ranked No. 4 in the world, played well enough in the opening set. The Scot was efficient in the first set, facing no break points and serving at 67%. Murray broke Berrer once to take a set lead.
Berrer looked as though he would break through in the second set. He had a pair of chances to take the early break, but Murray played a brilliant lob and managed to hold. From that point on, Murray dominated completely.
Murray will take on Grigor Dimitrov in the quarters.
Gael Monfils (2) def. Santiago Giraldo 6-4, 4-6, 6-1
Colombia’s Santiago Giraldo, ranked 52 in the world, played well in the first two sets against French No. 2 seed Gael Monfils. The Frenchman is coming back from a knee injury, which kept him out of Davis Cup a couple of weeks ago. The expected rust from an injury showed in the opener, though credit must be given to Giraldo, who played well enough to take advantage.
Monfils began to get his form back in the second set. He still looked a bit off, but his play picked up and he was able to level the match at a set a piece.
The third set was all Monfils. The Frenchman dominated completely, allowing Giraldo just 1 game and booking a spot in the quarters against Jarkko Nieminen.
