  • Bellucci beats Tomic, Haas also out of Stuttgart

    7/13/12 3:00 AM | Ricky Dimon
Seeds Bernard Tomic and Tommy Haas crash out of Stuttgart on Thursday. Thomaz Bellucci and Pavol Cervenak earn quarterfinal spots at their expense.

    Thomaz Bellucci d. (3) Bernard Tomic 7-6(6), 6-3

Bellucci survived a rocky first set then pulled away to defeat Tomic in one hour and 47 minutes during second-round action at the Mercedes Cup on Thursday afternoon. The Brazilian trailed by a break in the opener but soon found himself serving for the set at 6-5. Tomic recovered to force a tiebreaker, but the Australian could not convert a set point at 6-5 and eventually lost it eight points to six.

From there it was mostly all over for a slumping Tomic, who earned two breaks in the first set but could not solve his opponent's serve in the second. One break was all Bellucci needed to close out the proceedings on his own serve at 5-3. He will go up against Cedrik-Marcel Stebe in the quarterfinals on Friday.

    (Q) Pavol Cervenak d. (8) Tommy Haas 6-4, 6-4

Three Germans are still alive in Stuttgart, but Haas could not make it four in the quarterfinals as he went down in surprising straight sets to Cervenak on Thursday. Cervenak, who qualified for the main draw, saved eight of nine break points to advance in one hour and 32 minutes.

The 25-year-old Slovak is becoming something of a Stuttgart specialist. His only previous ATP quarterfinal came at this event last season. Cervenak also benefited from a sub-par performance by Haas, who committed seven double-faults while serving at a mere 52 percent. Second-seeded Juan Monaco opened with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tobias Kamke and he will battle Cervenak for a semifinal spot.
