  • Brown takes out Davydenko in Stuttgart

    7/9/12 11:08 PM | Ricky Dimon
Dustin Brown upsets Nikolay Davydenko in a third-set tiebreaker on Monday in Stuttgart. Brown will go up against either Benoit Paire or Philipp Petzschner in the second round.

Dustin Brown saved one match point before outlasting Nikolay Davydenko 7-5, 3-6, 7-6(7) in the first round of the Mercedes Cup on Monday afternoon. Brown struck 13 aces and survived a dreadful nine double-faults as he prevailed in two hours and four minutes.

Playing in front of his German fans, Brown took control early by earning his second break of the day at 5-5 in the opening set. He promptly closed things out one game later thanks to big serving. Davydenko, however, needed just one break in the second to get back on track and force a decider.

That set the stage for a dramatic third, in which Davydenko served for the match at 5-4. The 44th-ranked Russian even held a match point at 40-30 but he could not convert. Brown eventually played his way into a tiebreaker after saving four break points at 5-5. The world No. 150 held match points of his own at 6-4, 6-5, and 7-6 before finally sealing the deal at 8-7 following a Davydenko double-fault at 7-7.

"I'm happy that I won the first round," Brown said. "Nikolay is a great player. I tried to play my game as best as I could, trying to be aggressive and not getting into too many rallies. I'm very happy I got through today, as the last time I played here I lost 7-6 in the third to Gilles Simon.

"On the match point that I saved, he hit a good serve and I hit a good return," the winner explained. "I got a high ball and felt I had to go for it, as the percentage wouldn't be on my side if I got into a rally. I’ve lost and I've won matches with match point. What goes around comes around, so I'm looking forward to the next round."

Next up for Brown is either Benoit Paire or Philipp Petzschner.
