  • Monaco, Tipsarevic advance at Mercedes Cup

    7/14/12 7:16 AM | Ricky Dimon
Juan Monaco ends Pavol Cervenak's Stuttgart run in straight sets on Friday. Monaco is joined in the semifinals by Janko Tipsarevic, who overcame Bjorn Phau.

    (2) Juan Monaco d. (Q) Pavol Cervenak 6-1, 7-5

Monaco took care of business in the quarterfinals of the Mercedes Cup on Friday afternoon by dismissing Cervenak after one hour and 36 minutes of play. Contesting his second career ATP quarterfinal (Stuttgart 2011), Cervenak came out slow and dropped the first three games of the match. A rain delay came at that point but it did not get much better thereafter for the underdog Slovak, who mustered just one game in the opener.

Cervenak put up a better fight in the second, racing to improbable leads of 4-0 and 5-1. Monaco, however, woke back up and promptly won the last six games to clinch victory. The seconds-seeded Argentine wrapped up his effort with seven breaks and 22 of 30 second-serve return points won. He will battle Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on Saturday for a spot in the title match.

    (1) Janko Tipsarevic d. Bjorn Phau 6-7(6), 7-6(2), 6-4

An absolutely wild match in Stuttgart saw Tipsarevic save four match points before outlasting Phau in two hours and 57 minutes. Tipsarevic led 4-2 in the first set and had 11 break chances in the seventh game to take complete control. Phau fought off all 11 and managed to force a tiebreaker only to fall behind six points to two. The German came back from the brink again, winning six consecutive points to steal the set.

Phau then serve for the match twice at 5-4 and 6-5 in the second. He held a total of four match points but Tipsarevic somehow found a way to break both times and win the ensuing tiebreaker seven points to two. The top-seeded Serb faced three break points while trying to close out the proceedings at 5-4 in the third, but Phau could not convert. Tipsarevic held on to set up a semifinal meeting with Thomaz Bellucci.
