Tipsarevic, Brown advance to Stuttgart quarterfinals
7/12/12 12:57 AM | Ricky Dimon
Janko Tipsarevic opens in Stuttgart with a straight-set win over Steve Darcis on Wednesday. Tipsarevic is joined in the quarterfinals by Dustin Brown, who ousted Benoit Paire in three.
(1) Janko Tipsarevic d. Steve Darcis 6-4, 6-2
Tipsarevic beat Darcis in one hour and 19 minutes on Wednesday afternoon to reach the quarterfinals of the Mercedes Cup. The top-seeded Serb, who earned a first-round bye, dropped serve only once and saved all three of the break points he faced in the second set. Converting four his six break chances throughout the proceedings was more than enough for Tipsarevic.
Darcis at least managed to make the opener competitive, but he went away quietly in set two. The 75th-ranked Belgian won a mere four of 11 second-serve points in the second and won only 44 percent of those points in the match. Next up for Tipsarevic is Bjorn Phau, who dismissed Lukas Rosol in two tiebreakers.
(WC) Dustin Brown d. Benoit Paire 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-1
To delight of the home crowd, Brown continued his Stuttgart run by taking out an in-form Paire after one hour and 38 minutes of play on Wednesday. Brown, who upset Nikolay Davydenko in his opener, is through to his third career ATP quarterfinal and first since 2010. The German blasted 19 aces and fought of nine of 11 break points en route to victory.
Paire battled back nicely after losing the first set in a tiebreaker as he scored a late break in set two. The 47th-ranked Frenchman, though, was simply overpowered in the decider. Brown picked up his aggressiveness and kept points short, all but sealing the deal with his third break of the day at 4-1. The wild card will face Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on Friday for a place in the semifinals.
