Former World No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero captured his 16th ATP World Tour championship title, after defeating fellow Spaniard Pablo Andujar. The veteran came through the final in straight sets Sunday evening.
Juan Carlos Ferrero took home his first title of the season, having downed compatriot Pablo Andujar in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. The 31-year-old held seven of 8 service games, en route to a championship victory in an hour and 20 minutes.
After taking the opening set 6-4, Ferrero won six consecutive games to seal the second. Andujar committed seven double faults and won just 36% of his second-service points.
“It’s been a dream for me this week,” said Ferrero. “This first tournament playing here [after] a very long year at home, practicing zero, so I came here with no goals. Now I am the winner of the tournament. I’m very happy. I take a lot of confidence in myself again. I can believe that I can win tournaments again after the injury. That is the most important thing. The knee responds very well, so everything’s perfect.”
Both players are next to compete in Hamburg, where they could square off in the round of 16.
