Guillermo Canas battled three sets for a spot in the quarterfinals.
This match looked like a contest to see who could be broken the most times. There were a mind boggling thirteen breaks of serve in the three set match. While neither man is known for his powerful serve, the number of breaks bordered on the absurd.
Argentine Guillermo Canas was the favorite in the match, but that did not appear to be the case in the first set. Serbia’s Boris Pashanski stayed with Canas through the first set. Each man secured three breaks of serve. Pashanski played a much better tiebreak and snagged the first set from a slightly befuddled Canas.
True to his reputation, Canas went right back to work, grinding his forehand from the baseline and tracking down shot after shot. Both men cleaned up their serving in the second set. There were only two breaks of serve, both of which went to the Argentine. He closed out the set with minimum fuss.
Pashanski was not done fighting yet, however. The quality in the third set deteriorated again. A series of breaks of serve (five for the set) marked the deciding set. Pashanski actually served for the match at 5-4, but could not close it out. Canas got the break, finally held and broke again to take the match.
