  • Blake takes out Del Potro to reach Stockholm quarters

    10/19/11 10:21 PM | Ricky Dimon
Juan Martin Del Potro is out after just one match in Stockholm. James Blake upsets the No. 2 seed and advances to the quarterfinals along with Kevin Anderson.

James Blake d. (2) Juan Martin Del Potro 6-4, 6-4

Del Potro's first tournament action since the U.S. Open did not go as planned, with the Argentine going down to Blake in his opener at the If Stockholm Open on Wednesday night. A tight opening set saw neither player garner a break chance through the first nine games of the match en route to a 5-4 Blake advantage. Serving to stay in it, Del Potro cracked at the most inopportune time and Blake capitalized on the first break point of the day to clinch the set.

Blake had an opportunity to blow it wide open in the second only to see Del Potro save a pair of break points in the second game. Still, the No. 2 seed never got into a rhythm and he continued to be hopeless in the return department--winning only four points (all off second serves) in five games. Once again, Blake struck when it mattered most at 5-4. Del Potro held a game point, but the veteran American eventually set up a match point at ad-out and converted it with a backhand volley winner. Blake advanced after one hour and 27 minutes and now awaits either David Nalbandian or Ivan Dodig.

    (5) Kevin Anderson d. (WC) Tommy Haas 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-4

Anderson earned the only breaks of the match at 4-4 in each of the final two sets to subdue a spirited effort from Haas after two hours and one minute on Wednesday afternoon. Raising his level at the tail-end of the season, Haas--like his opponent--did not face a single break point in the first set. The 33-year-old German went on to dominate the ensuing tiebreaker seven points to three.

Haas, though, had no chance in the return game. Anderson served incredibly well the whole match, firing 20 aces without double-faulting while putting in a ridiculous 81 percent of his first deliveries. As a result, one break was enough for the 6'8'' South African in both the second and the third. Interestingly, both breaks came at love in the ninth games. Anderson, who allowed Haas no break points the entire way but battled out of a deuce at 5-4 in the second, awaits either Gael Monfils or Bernard Tomic.

What's going on with delpo? Things are starting to drag a bit.

Blake is kind of a funny player. Until he lost 10-8 in the fifth last year at the Australian Open last year he was undefeated against Del Potro. It's as if he refuses to lose to someone he's never lost to before, no matter how much better they may be.

alex,

I am surprised Delpo lost to Blake. It seems that Delpo hasn't been able to get back to his best form. He looked great against Nole in DC, but can't seem to be consistent. Before his semifinal performance in DC, he has a very lackluster hard court season. I don't know if this is going to be the new normal for him, or if at some point he will finally get to a higher quality of play and remain there. It remains to be seen if this will happen.

the trouibling aspect of it all for delpo fans is that before his injury he was Mr Consistency. He was Mr Predictable too but that didn't matter because even if the best players knew hwo he was going to play (which they did) he could still blow them off the court - e.g. fed in the uso final. Latterly he was even adding some feely netplay to his game, but the Route 1 stuff is enough for him if he can recapture his accuracy and consistency. Maybe something just needs to click up top and then he'll start picking up a trophy a week again and build up his mo for the slams. still, you'd have thought he'd be back up there by now. but he's still young.
