Lopez takes out Tipsarevic in Shanghai first round
10/11/11 3:34 PM | Ricky Dimon
Feliciano Lopez halts Janko Tipsarevic's hot streak with a straight-set victory on Tuesday in Shanghai. Radek Stepanek also advances to the second round.
Feliciano Lopez, a 2009 Shanghai Masters semifinalist, kicked off his 2011 campaign in impressive fashion by ousting No. 9 seed Janko Tipsarevic 7-6(2), 7-6(3) on Tuesday afternoon. Lopez cracked 12 aces, dominated both tiebreakers, and advanced after two hours and three minutes of play.
Tipsarevic had been on fire during the summer (Montreal semifinalist, U.S. Open quarterfinalist) and earlier this fall (first ATP title in Kuala Lumpur), but fatigue could be a factor now. The 13th-ranked Serb dropped his Tokyo opener last week and had all kinds of trouble dealing with Lopez's backhand slice in this one. Tipsarevic was also doomed by winning just 60 percent of the points even when he put his first serve in play.
Lopez could have won the opener with more ease, but Tipsarevic saved three break points along the way. After no breaks were exchanged in the first set, a total of four took place in the second as both men served horribly. But the result was the same in the 'breaker, with the Spaniard taking control early and often.
Radek Stepanek also advanced to the second round on Tuesday, easing past Chinese wild card Ze Zhang 6-3, 6-3. Stepanek won four of nine return games and dropped serve only once as he prevailed in just one hour and eight minutes. The veteran Czech saved both of the break points he faced in the first set and clinched victory at 5-3 in the second with his fourth break.
Next up for Stepanek is No. 8 seed and Beijing champion Tomas Berdych, while Lopez will go up against Alex Bogomolov.
