Defending champion Andy Murray is through to the final eight in Shanghai following his three-set victory over 13th seed Stanislas Wawrinka. The Scot will face surprise quarterfinalist Matthew Ebden in the next round.
World No. 4 Andy Murray survived a challenging round of 16, having upended fellow seed Stanislas Wawrinka in three sets. The 24-year-old, looking to win his third consecutive title this week, recorded the 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory in two hours and 12 minutes.
After splitting the first two sets, Murray built a double break lead to 5-0 in the final set. The Scot served for the match at 5-1 but was unable to close. He served again at 5-3, then closed with his 23rd winner of the day.
"I got myself pumped up right at the beginning of the third set," admitted Murray. "I think it was important. Stan was playing very well. I was trying to control the ball, especially (in the) middle of the second set, I was really struggling. I started dictating a lot of the points with my forehand and trying to get the first strike in 'cause the court is playing very fast. That worked well.
"I served well for most of the match. It was just my timing was a bit off on some of my shots. I feel fine. My legs and stuff were a wee bit tired at the end of the match. But I (have) no stiffness at all in my body."
Murray will take on qualifier Matthew Ebden for a place in the semifinals. The Australian upset 8th seed Gilles Simon in the round of 16.
