Rafael Nadal eases past Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in straight sets on Wednesday in Shanghai. Nadal will go up against Florian Mayer for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Playing three days after losing to Andy Murray in the Tokyo title match, Rafael Nadal bounced back nicely with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in round two of the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Wednesday night. Nadal broke serve four times and avenged a 2010 Bangkok loss to his fellow Spaniard after one hour and 45 minutes.
The beginning for Nadal, however, must have brought back painful memories of their most recent encounter. Garcia-Lopez, who saved 24 of 26 break points in Bangkok and 18 of 18 in the final two sets, fought off three in his opening service game to hold for 1-1. If Nadal had any doubts, though, he put them to rest by finally converting a break chance at 2-1 when his opponent struck an errant forehand.
Garcia-Lopez ended up fighting off four more break points to stay within striking distance in the first set, but he did not come close to getting back on serve. Nadal dropped only five points in five service games and wrapped up the opening frame of play with a love hold.
The second-ranked Spaniard appeared to be off to the races when he broke for a 2-1 lead in set two; and he was--but not before immediately giving back the break. Nadal recovered and won four straight games, racing to victory in style. Another love hold at 5-2 ended the proceedings as Shanghai's top seed clinched the win with a final forehand winner.
Nadal, who will take on Florian Mayer in round three, recorded 16 winners and 21 unforced errors. A mistake-prone Garcia-Lopez hit 15 winners while making 42 errors to go along with eight double-faults.
