Coming off a title in Beijing, Tomas Berdych cruises through his Shanghai opener against Radek Stepanek on Wednesday. Berdych awaits either Feliciano Lopez or Alex Bogomolov.
While other World Tour Finals contenders have struggled this week, Tomas Berdych is going full steam ahead toward London after taking care of Radek Stepanek 6-4, 6-3 in round two of the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Wednesday night. Berdych, who captured the Beijing title three days ago, advanced after one hour and 17 minutes of play.
The match got off to an inauspicious start for Berdych when he dropped serve at love in the opening game. From there, however, it was all the world No. 7. He broke back for 2-2 then seized his second break of the day when it mattered most, with his opponent serving to stay in the first set at 4-5. Stepanek saved two set points, but Berdych came up with a clean forehand winner to convert his third opportunity.
A break in the fourth game of set two sent Berdych off to the races. The Czech had no problems consolidating the lead over his countryman until faced with the pressure of serving for the match at 5-3. Stepanek suddenly got a look at two break points, but Berdych fought off one with an ace and another with a forehand pass. He clinched victory two points later.
Shanghai's No. 6 seed struck six aces and won 27 of 30 first-serve points. The win--if he follows it up with more victories--could allow Berdych to separate himself from fellow London hopefuls Mardy Fish and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, both of whom lost in the first round. Berdych is already ahead of Tsonga and will move past Fish in the year-to-date rankings.
Next up for Berdych is either Feliciano Lopez or Alex Bogomolov.
