Ferrero, Verdasco advance in Shanghai
10/10/11 5:17 PM | Cheryl Murray
Spaniards Juan Carlos Ferrero and Fernando Verdasco moved into the Shanghai second round with straight set wins.
Fernando Verdasco (16) def. Zhe Li (WC) 6-2, 6-2
This start was as easy as Fernando Verdasco could have hoped. Chinese wildcard Zhe Li, ranked 358 in the world, was simply not able to offer any resistance to Verdasco’s game. The Spaniard faced just one break point in the match, in the second set, which he was able to fight off. Li was broken twice in each set.
The win sends Verdasco into the second round, where he will take on countryman Juan Carlos Ferrero, who defeated Mikhail Youzhny on Monday.
Juan Carlos Ferrero def. Mikhail Youzhny 7-6(6), 6-4
Spanish veteran Juan Carlos Ferrero booked a fourth win in five tries over Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny. This latest upset win sends Youzhny packing after the Russian put in a solid quarterfinal showing in Beijing.
This match was a study in break points chances missed for both men. Ferrer actually had a whopping 14 chances to break Youzhny’s serve. The Russian managed to fight every single one of them off, until Ferrero earned himself a break point on match point. After staying strong through 2 sets and more than a dozen break points, the Russian double-faulted to not only give Ferrero his only break of the match, but also the match itself.
