  • Dolgopolov, Giraldo into the Shanghai third round

    10/12/11 8:13 PM | Cheryl Murray
Santiago Giraldo knocked another seed, No. 14 Jurgen Melzer, out of the running in Shanghai, with Alexandr Dolgopolov joining the Colombian in the third round.

    Alexandr Dolgopolov (12) def. Albert Ramos 5-7, 6-3, 6-2

No. 12 seed Alexandr Dolgopolov set up a third-round showdown againt Australia’s Bernard Tomic with his three-set victory over Spanish qualifier Albert Ramos. The Spaniard had already taken out Marin Cilic this week coming into the second round. And after snagging the first round, he looked like he might be ready to claim a second scalp.

Dolgopolov, however, got his game back in the second and third sets. The Ukrainian didn’t permit Ramos so much as a whiff at another break point, while he earned four more more of his own for the win.

    Santiago Giraldo def. Jurgen Melzer (14) 4-6, 6-4, 7-6(5)

No. 14 seed Jurgen Melzer of German cannot seem to string together more than one win at a time any more. The Austrian hasn’t won more than one match at any given tournament since Hamburg back in July. This week he fell victim to the surprisingly in-form Santiago Giraldo, who is generally thought of as a clay-court specialist.

Giraldo will take on Kei Nishikori, who upset Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, in the third round.
