Qualifier Matthew Ebden kept his run in Shanghai alive, having ousted 8th seed Gilles Simon Thursday afternoon. The Australian moved into the quarterfinals, where he will face defending champion Andy Murray.
World No. 124 Matthew Ebden advanced to the Rolex Masters quarterfinals following his three-set victory over 8th seed Gilles Simon. The 23-year-old Australian sealed the match in two hours and 8 minutes, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(8).
"I guess the situation, to play for a quarterfinal spot in a Masters tournament is huge," said Ebden. "I was definitely a bit nervous out there closing out the match. But I think he was, too. (The) third set tiebreak, it was very exciting, (and an) incredible feeling when I eventually won.
"I think two of (five match points) I had good plays and he hit two passing-shot winners. One of them he hit an ace. One of them I missed a volley I should have made. That was a bit disheartening. I managed to just hang in there. You keep going with it, stick to my game-plan, and eventually (I) got over the line. Very relieving. Very, very exciting."
Ebden is slated to meet world No. 4 Andy Murray in the next round. The defending champion held on to defeat 13th seed Stanislas Wawrinka in the round of 16.
