Feliciano Lopez rolls over Florian Mayer in straight sets on Friday in Shanghai. Lopez is back is the semifinals after reaching the same stage in 2009, and he will go up against countryman David Ferrer.
Feliciano Lopez cruised past Florian Mayer 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Friday evening. Lopez struck 10 aces and set up an all-Spanish semifinal against David Ferrer after just one hour and nine minutes.
Playing a day after scoring the biggest win of his career, a straight-set upset of No. 1 seed Rafael Nadal, Mayer never showed any signs of duplicating the performance. The 23rd-ranked German got outplayed in every department, to the extent that he won fewer than 60 percent of the points even when he put his first serve in play.
Lopez, coming off a stellar straight-set win over Tomas Berdych, continued his fine form. The world No. 28 served at a mere 49 percent, but he won more than 75 percent of the points on both his first and second serves thanks to an impressive all-court display.
Mayer saved multiple break points in the early stages for 2-2 in the opening set, but he was overmatched the rest of the way. Shanghai's No. 15 seed lost four straight games and won only four points in his first four return games. One break in the second was enough for Lopez, who remained dominant on serve and wrapped up the proceedings with a hold at 5-4.
Lopez, who perennially heats up at this point in the season, is back in the Shanghai semis after getting this far in 2009. He was also a three-time quarterfinalist when the Madrid Masters occupied this week on the calendar.
