Nalbandian wins, Garcia-Lopez books rematch with Nadal
10/10/11 4:32 PM | Ricky Dimon
David Nalbandian defeats Ernests Gulbis in straight sets on Monday in Shanghai. Nalbandian is joined in the second round by Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, who will go up against Rafael Nadal.
(WC) David Nalbandian d. Ernests Gulbis 7-5, 6-4
Nalbandian survived an error-fest and took out Gulbis in one hour and 32 minutes on Monday afternoon during first-round action at the Shanghai Rolex Masters. The Argentine got through a close opening set but not before immediately giving back an early break. After Gulbis double-faulted on break point at 3-3, Nalbandian did the same at 4-4. Gulbis did it again at 5-5 and this time Nalbandian consolidated his advantage with a set-clinching hold at 6-5.
Gulbis continued to serve horribly in the second, finishing the match with a first-serve percentage of 55. The Latvian tossed in four double-faults in set one and five in set two. Nalbandian converted only one of his six break chances in the second, but he dropped a mere four points in five service games so one break was easily enough. A final hold at 5-4 for the world No. 57 booked his spot in the second round alongside Florian Mayer.
Guillermo Garcia-Lopez d. Somdev Devvarman 6-4, 6-3
Devvarman managed to stay competitive en route to 4-4 in the first set, but Garcia-Lopez went on a surge from there and advanced after one hour and 27 minutes of play. After saving three break points early, the Spaniard capitalized on his second opportunity at 5-4 to wrap up the set in style. Garcia-Lopez donated his own serve once in the second, but two breaks of his own allowed him to serve things out at 5-3.
Despite serving at a woeful 39 percent, Garcia-Lopez was broken on just one occasion because he won more than half of his second-serve points. Devvarman was doomed by 45 percent serving and he won only 11 of 29 second-serve points, of which he played far too many. Next up for the world No. 53 is top-seeded countryman Rafael Nadal. They last faced each other a year ago in Bangkok, where Garcia-Lopez scored a three-set upset.
