Juan Carlos Ferrero upended countryman Fernando Verdasco as another seed was sent packing at the Shanghai Masters.
Juan Carlos Ferrero def. Fernando Verdasco 4-6, 6-3, 6-2
Fernando Verdasco’s woes continued on Wednesday, as the No. 16 seed was knocked out in the second round by veteran countryman Juan Carlos Ferrero. Verdasco dominated in the opening set, but he could not keep his level up. Ferrero played steady baseline tennis and took advantage of Verdasco’s poor play on break points to level the match at a set a piece.
The third set remained on serve until the sixth game. Verdasco had 40-0 to level the set at 3-3, when out of nowhere, Ferrero rattled off five consecutive points to get the break. Verdasco’s game fell apart and he did not win another for the remainder of the match.
David Ferrer (3) def. Milos Raonic 7-5, 7-6(7)
Milos Raonic continued to make his comeback from summer surgery as he took on David Ferrer in Shanghai. Raonic secured a break of Ferrer’s serve to start each of the sets, but the Canadian got sloppy on the forehand wing too often. Ferrer, who is known for his solid baseline game, was able to get the break back in both cases.
The tiebreaker was tight, with the mini-break lead held by both men before Ferrer finally won 9-7. Ferrer will take on countryman Ferrero in the third round.
