Juan Carlos Ferrero had David Ferrer under his thumb for a full set and a half, but an unfortunate injury and great fight from Ferrer undid the veteran.
David Ferrer looked like he might make an exit at the Shanghai Masters in straight sets. The world No. 5 was utterly dismal for all of the first set and half of the second. His first-serve percentage languished at 45% in the opening frame, and he paid the price with three breaks of serve against him.
The second set featured some tough luck for Ferrero. He was going along nicely, when he rolled his ankle in the seventh game of the set. A quick taping and the veteran got back to work. Ferrer earned himself a pair of break points at 4-4, but his countryman fought them off.
The real turning point of the match, though, came at 5-4 with Ferrer serving to stay in the match. Ferrero played some exquisite tennis to earn himself three match points, only to see them erased by the scrappy Ferrer. The world No. 5 broke Ferrero in the next game, and eventually snatched the second set.
Ferrero lost steam after the missed opportunities in the second. Ferrer breezed through the third set to move into the quarters, where he will face Andy Roddick.
