David Ferrer got revenge for his U.S. Open round of 16 loss to Andy Roddick this week at the Shanghai Masters.
American Andy Roddick made a match of this, particularly in the first and third sets, but he never managed to secure a break of Ferrer’s serve.
The surprise of the match was that Roddick spent more time scrambling behind the baseline than Ferrer did. The Spaniard is generally thought of as a retriever, but he played aggressively inside the baseline for most of the match.
Roddick, for his part, was often seen a meter or so behind the baseline. The American stayed in the match largely on the strength of his serve, which was working well enough to keep Ferrer out of most of his service games.
Roddick crumbled under the Ferrer return in the middle set, where he lost serve twice, but otherwise the American held his own. Ferrer was simply better in the third-set tiebreaker.
Ferrer will take on countryman Feliciano Lopez in the semifinals.
