Despite a dip in form in the second set, Andy Roddick managed to dispatch Yen-Hsun Lu to earn a spot in the second round.
This was not Andy Roddick at his best. The American had nearly double the unforced errors as winners and looked out of sorts with his form. Still, Yen-Hsun Lu, Taiwan’s highest-ranked player at No. 74 in the world, could not take advantage for more than a set.
Roddick’s serve kept him out of trouble in the first set. With 75% first serves in, six aces and two break points saved, the American seemed poised to roll through the match in straight sets.
The second set was dismal in terms of serving for Roddick, and Lu was able to take advantage. Roddick’s first serve percentage dipped to just over 50% and Lu actually had more aces (four) than the American (one). The Taiwanese man took the second set with a single break of Roddick's serve.
Lu crumbled in the third set. He seemed to run out of gas after the effort of winning the second and he donated far too many errors to the Roddick cause. The American broke for a second time with Lu serving at 2-5 to get the win.
Roddick will take on Grigor Dimitrov in the second round.
