  • Almagro cruises into Sao Paulo semis, Verdasco ousted

    2/17/12 7:05 PM | Ricky Dimon
Nicolas Almagro reaches the Sao Paulo semifinals with an easy win over Carlos Berlocq on Friday. Next up for Almagro is Albert Ramos, who dismissed Fernando Verdasco.

    (1) Nicolas Almagro d. (5) Carlos Berlocq 6-3, 6-2

Almagro won a second consecutive match with getting broken a single time as he trounced Berlocq in one hours and 30 minutes on Friday afternoon at the Brasil Open. The top-seeded Spaniard, who faced no break points in round two against Victor Hanescu, saved one break point in the first set versus Berlocq then completely dominated on serve in the second.

Berlocq's last-gasp effort came at 1-3 in set two when he dug out of a 0-40 hole to hold serve. The 42nd-ranked Argentine, however, failed to win another game the rest of the way despite fighting off many more break points. Almagro wrapped up the victory with a routine hold at 5-2, clinching match point when Berlocq sent a backhand wide. The world No. 11 will battle countryman Albert Ramos in Saturday's semifinals.

    (8) Albert Ramos d. (3) Fernando Verdasco 7-6(5), 6-3

Ramos battled back from a break down in the first set then raced away from Verdasco to book his spot in the Sao Paulo semifinals on Friday afternoon. After forcing a tiebreaker, the 64th-ranked Spaniard pulled ahead 5-2. He eventually squandered a set point on his own serve at 6-4 but converted his next chance when Verdasco netted a backhand.

Verdasco saved a break point in the second game of set two to stay within striking distance, but he dropped serve at 2-3 to completely lose his way. Ramos saved both of the break points he faced in the second to consolidate his advantage. A love hold at 5-3 wrapped up the proceedings for the No. 8 seed.
