  • Andreev takes out Gonzalez in Sao Paulo

    2/14/12 11:25 PM | Ricky Dimon
Igor Andreev dismisses Fernando Gonzalez in straight sets on Tuesday in Sao Paulo. Andreev advances to the second round and awaits either Santiago Giraldo or Albert Ramos.

Fernando Gonzalez's career moved one step closer to closure, as the former Australian Open runner-up lost to Igor Andreev 6-2, 6-3 in the first round of the Brasil Open on Tuesday evening. Andreev never came close to facing a break point as he rolled in one hour and four minutes.

Andreev had come through qualifying to get into the main draw, and he maintained his momentum in the first set. The Russian seized the opening break of the day at 2-1 when Gonzalez struck an errant forehand. That was all Andreev would have needed, because he dropped a mere three points in four service games. For good measure, though, he added another break at 5-2 to take the set in style.

More of the same continued in the second, with Andreev again losing just three points in four service games. Gonzalez managed to hold three times en route to a 3-3 deadlock, but he was broken at love in the eighth game. Andreev promptly served out the match at love, clinching victory with a service winner.

Gonzalez finished with two aces and no double-faults, but he was hopeless in the return game and struggled on his own second-serve points. The 31-year-old Chilean, who has been plagued by injuries, is retiring next month in Miami.

Andreev moves on to face either Santiago Giraldo or Albert Ramos.

Well ... that was fast. So sad when our favourites leave. Ricky does he play anywhere else before Miami?

Gonzo has a WC into Buenos Aires next week.

I assume he may get more into Acapulco and Indian Wells before Miami, but we'll see.

Thanks.
