  • Nalbandian advances at Brasil Open, Ferrero ousted

    2/16/12 2:49 AM | Ricky Dimon
Leonardo Mayer takes out Juan Carlos Ferrero in straight sets on Wednesday in Sao Paolo. Mayer is joined in the second round by David Nalbandian, who rolled over Benoit Paire.

    Leondardo Mayer d. (6) Juan Carlos Ferrero 7-6(6), 6-2

Mayer scored a first-round upset on Wednesday afternoon at the Brasil Open, ousting Ferrero in one hour and 52 minutes. The world No. 80 fired 11 aces and saved all five of Ferrero's break-point opportunities. A tight first set saw both players hold the entire way. Mayer fought off the only break point he faced and missed thee chances of his own, including one set point with his opponent serving to stay in it.

Ferrero led by two mini-breaks in the ensuing tiebreaker, but he lost five straight points from 4-1 to 4-6. Mayer promptly squandered both set points, but he finally finished things with a winning backhand at 7-6. From there it was all Mayer. The Argentine broke immediately to open the second and never looked back. He served out the match at 5-2 to set up a meeting with Jeremy Chardy.

    David Nalbandian d. Benoit Paire 7-6(3), 6-3

Nalbandian survived a sloppy and somewhat bizarre match, getting past Paire in one hour and 39 minutes on Wednesday. The Argentine surged to a 5-1 lead and had triple set point in the seventh game only to see his opponent storm back and force a tiebreaker. Nalbandian finally righted the ship and raced through the 'breaker seven points to three.

Then it was Paire's turn to squander a lead in the second. The 98th-ranked Frenchman pulled ahead 3-1 and had a 0-40 opportunity on Nalbandian's serve. When Nalbandian saved every break point and held, it was all over for the underdog. Nalbandian ended the match on a five-game winning streak to book his spot alongside Gilles Simon in round two.
