  • Volandri crushes Montanes, Marti ousts Gil

    2/13/12 8:46 PM | Ricky Dimon
Filippo Volandri takes out Albert Montanes in straight sets on Monday in Sao Paulo. Volandri is joined in the second round by Javier Marti, an upset winner over Frederico Gil.

    Filippo Volandri d. (7) Albert Montanes 6-2, 6-3

Volandri dropped serve only once and won at least 73 percent of both his first and second-serve points as he dominated Montanes in the opening round of the Brasil Open on Monday. The Italian earned his first match victory of the season; not too surprising given that this was only his second match on clay. He booked his spot in the second round after just one hour and four minutes of play.

Montanes, who drops to 2-4 for his 2012 campaign, was coming off a quarterfinal showing in Vina del Mar but never could find the range in this one. The seventh-seeded Spaniard dropped serve four times and he won a woeful two total points in his last five return games. Volandri served at 76 percent for the match and he wrapped up his effort in style with a routine hold at 5-3 in the second.

(WC) Javier Marti d. Frederico Gil 6-2, 6-4

Marti picked up the second ATP win of his career, upsetting Gil in one hour and 25 minutes on Monday afternoon in Sao Paulo. The 20-year-old Spaniard came out firing and took advantage of woeful serving by his opponent to break twice in the first set. Marti saved all three of the break points he faced before earning his second break of the day at 5-2.

The second set saw Marti seize what appeared to be a decisive break at 4-3. After taking a 15-0 lead in the following game, the underdog lost four straight points out of nowhere and failed to serve out the match. Nevertheless, Marti bounced right back. Gil had a game point for 5-5, but Marti raised his level and soon converted match point will a brilliant backhand pass. Next up for the world No. 181 is third-seeded Fernando Verdasco.
