  • San Jose - Ginepri stuns Malisse, Young stumbles

    2/15/12 2:29 PM | Cheryl Murray
Robby Ginepri decimated Xavier Malisse for his first ATP tour win of the season. Fellow American Donald Young did not fare nearly as well.

Robby Ginepri (WC) def. Xavier Malisse 6-1, 6-2

American veteran Robby Ginepri posted an impressive win over Belgium’s Xavier Malisse on Tuesday night in California. Ginepri, who has been playing the Challenger circuit with a ranking at 235th in the world, needed a wildcard to get into the SAP Open.

Malisse has been in dreadful form all year, with this loss marking his fourth consecutive first-round exit in 2012. He dropped serve five times to Ginepri and went 0 for 4 on his own break-point chances.

The win sends Ginepri into the second round, where he will face the winner of Olivier Rochus and Ryan Harrison.

Michael Russell def. Donald Young (7) 6-1, 7-6(6)

American Donald Young had his breakout year in 2011. The American saw his ranking surge to 39th in the world. The American even made his way to his first-ever ATP tour final (in Bangkok). Young seems to be back to his pre-2011 form now, however. He has only managed to win one match in 2012 so far, with this current loss coming on home soil.

After playing a positively dismal first set, Young seemed to find his way. He got the break advantage in the second set and had the opportunity to level the match at 5-3. Russell broke him twice and earned his own chance to serve out the match. Young broke back to force the tiebreaker, but Russell managed to close it out in straight sets. Russell advances to the second round where he will play either Sam Querrey or Denis Istomin.
