  • Monfils advances, Wawrinka outlasts Haase

    5/14/12 5:37 PM | Ricky Dimon
Gael Monfils is through to the Rome second round after dismissing Alex Bogomolov in straight sets on Monday. Monfils is joined in the second round by Stanislas Wawrinka, a three-set winner over Robin Haase.

    (13) Gael Monfils d. Alex Bogomolov 6-4, 6-1

Monfils advanced to the second round of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia on Monday afternoon by easing past a slumping Bogomolov in one hour and 19 minutes. Bogomolov, who has now lost seven matches in a row dating back to Delray Beach, at least managed to make the first set relatively competitive. Monfils, though, served extremely well and closed it out with a clutch hold at 5-4.

Bogomolov completely fell apart in set two. The Russian won a mere four return points and saved only one of four break points. Monfils had to do little more than keep the ball in play before clinching victory with his fifth break. Next up for the 14th-ranked Frenchman is Juan Carlos Ferrero.

    Stanislas Wawrinka d. (Q) Robin Haase 6-1, 4-6, 7-5

Wawrinka improved to 5-0 lifetime against Haase with his fourth three-set victory in five career meetings after another nail-biter on Monday in Rome. The Swiss started off comfortably enough, breaking twice in the first set and holding all four of his service games (albeit while saving six break points). Haase battle back in the second and dominated on serve before breaking when it mattered most at 5-4.

That set the stage for a back-and-forth third, in which Wawrinka went up a quick break. The world No. 20 survived a long service game at 3-2 only to give back the break at 4-3. Haase found himself two points from victory with a 0-30 lead on his opponent's serve at 4-5, but the Dutchman could not convert. Wawrinka held, stole the momentum, and won the next two games to advance. Next up for Wawrinka is Madrid semifinalist Janko Tipsarevic.
