  • Federer wins Rome opener over Berlocq

Roger Federer kicks off his Rome quest on Wednesday with a straight-set victory at the expense of Carlos Berlocq. Next up for Federer is a showdown with fellow veteran Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Roger Federer is off to a winning start at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia after dismissing Carlos Berlocq 6-3, 6-4 during second-round action on Wednesday afternoon. Federer converted three of four break chances to advance in one hour and nine minutes.

Coming off a title on the blue clay of Madrid, Federer maintained his momentum with a blistering start. The world No. 2 won 12 of the first 13 points while breaking at 1-0 en route to a commanding 3-0 lead. Federer fought off two break points at 4-2 then served things out at love in the ninth game.

Berlocq appeared to be finished when he donated serve at 2-2 in the second, losing break point as his opponent struck a forehand winner. The underdog Argentine, however, battled back and broke for the first time with a clean forehand return at 30-40 in the following game.

For Federer, it was nothing more than a minor hiccup. The third-seeded Swiss earned a routine break at 4-4 then served out the proceedings at love. He converted his first match point by forcing Berlocq into a backhand error.

Berlocq committed a mere nine unforced errors, but he managed to record only 13 winners. Federer finished with 24 winners and 22 errors. As he seeks his first Rome title, Federer will go up against Juan Carlos Ferrero in the third round.

Congrats Roger.

Not spectacular, turned up the heat when he wanted and dispatched Berlocq quite easily.

Onwards and upwards.

HOPP Roger!!

Rog sounded a little off colour in his interview after the game. Hope it is nothing serious and he is fresh and ready to go against Ferrero. Nice little work out for him in the first round can't see Ferrero causing him many problems either to be honest. Keep it up maestro!
