  • Djokovic wins in comeback over Monaco

    5/17/12 2:48 PM | Cheryl Murray
After going down a set and a break, Novak Djokovic clawed his way to victory over Argentina’s Juan Monaco.

With the wind gusting and blowing the clay around in clouds, world No. 1 Novak Djokovic was not playing his best tennis to start this third round match. The Serb appeared to come out with his hard court game, a strategy that did not work against crafty clay-courter Juan Monaco.

While Monaco was going for his shots freely, Djokovic seemed at a loss to come up with a game-plan. Monaco was able to nab a service break and successfully serve out the first set.

Djokovic’s shaky play continued into his first service game of the second set, where he was broken yet again. The Argentine took a 2-0 lead, but on his next service game he donated four unforced errors in a row to hand the break right back to Djokovic.

The top seed went on to win the next 6 games to level the match at a set apiece.

Monaco finally stopped the blood-letting in the third set, holding until the eighth game of the set. Djokovic poured on pressure to move to 30-40 with Monaco serving for 4-4, and secured the crucial break for a 5-3 lead. The world No. 1 served out the match without difficulty and moves into the quarterfinals, where he awaits the winner of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Juan Martin Del Potro.

I have to say a good word about Juan Monaco - he played a great match and took it to Novak. The conditions were awful but it was the same for both players.

Congrats to Novak for the win.

Djokovic about smashing his racquet:

"It's not the first time and I don't think it will be the last time - I'm a player with a lot of emotion," Djokovic said of breaking his racket. "I hope kids didn't see it. But then it changed the match. ... The momentum swung to my side.''
