  • Djokovic books semifinal spot with win over Tsonga

Novak Djokovic overcame shaky first-set form to secure a victory over world No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. The Serb moves into the Rome semifinals.

Novak Djokovic did his part to make a blockbuster semifinal in Rome. The Serb upended France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to book a date opposite new world No. 2 Roger Federer on Saturday.

Tsonga started off their quarterfinal match with shaky form. The Frenchman allowed Djokovic to dictate play from the baseline and immediately went down a break of serve as a result.

Djokovic held onto the break until 3-1, when Tsonga earned the break back again. The next handful of games was almost comedic. Djokovic broke back to go up 4-2 which he followed up by dropping serve yet again.

Tsonga had a break point at 5-5 that would have given him the chance to serve out the set, but he was unable to convert.

From that moment, the Frenchman won exactly one game for the rest match. The missed chances completely took the wind out of Tsonga’s sails.
