  • Nadal cruises into quarterfinals

    5/17/12 6:41 PM | Kelli DeMario
World No. 3 Rafael Nadal kept his bid for a sixth Rome title alive, having dismissed fellow Spaniard Marcel Granollers in straight sets. The five-time champion is through to take on world No. 7 Tomas Berdych in the quarterfinal.

Second seed Rafael Nadal made the last eight in Rome after downing compatriot Marcel Granollers Thursday afternoon. The 25-year-old converted five of eight break points en route to a 6-1, 6-1 victory in 88 minutes.

With the opening set in hand, Nadal went on to lead 3-0 in set two. An insurance break came at 4-1 for the five-time champion, who completed the match without losing serve. Nadal ended the day with 27 of 37 first-service points captured.

"I started the match bad with two double faults with my serve, but after the first two or three games, I started to play well - good forehand, control of the point and going to net," Nadal said, post-match. "Conditions were difficult and windy but I think I found rhythm and after third game I played very solid."

He will take on 7th seed Tomas Berdych in the next round. The Madrid runner-up took out 12th seed Nicolas Almagro in the round of 16, 7-6(3), 6-3.

Rafa kicked his water bottles over as he picked his racquet up to go for the coin toss and I thought, OH OH, is that a bad omen. It turned to be a good omen because he won in style.

In his autobiography Rafa mentions that he has a whole set way of going about the last stages before going on the court and what he does on court. Not so much a superstition, he says, as a routine to go through to let him get his mindset fully where he wants to have while on court. You know, the warrior (Mr Hyde) vs the off-court person (Dr. Jekyll).
