  • Murray survives Nalbandian charge

    5/15/12 9:57 PM | Cheryl Murray
After getting off to a quick start, No. 4 seed Andy Murray found himself in trouble against Argentine veteran David Nalbandian.

Andy Murray just slid past David Nalbandian 6-1, 4-6, 7-5 to earn a spot in the Rome third round.

Not only did Murray get off to a great start, but Nalbandian struggled to find any sort of rhythm. The result was a first-set breadstick and a seemingly easy run for the Scot.

But the Argentine had other ideas. With a fresh start in the second set, Nalbandian’s level of play increased dramatically. The change of pace seemed to surprise Murray, who started to play sloppy tennis of his own.

Nalbandian was the better player throughout the second set and he drew first blood in the third set as well, getting the break with a brilliant return game. The impending disaster seemed to wake Murray from his middle set funk, because the he answered with a brilliant return game of his own to earn the break right back again.

The third set featured some outstanding clay-court tennis from both men. Murray secured another break of serve at 5-5 to give himself the opportunity to serve out the match. Nalbandian had a break point to get right back on serve again, but the No. 4 seed lucked out with a net cord that dribbled over to his opponent's side. Murray eventually held for the win.

Hi Deuce. the warmth and sun of Spain have done their work and, apart from a slight limp, am now walking almost normally. Have only been able to watch tennis intermittently but return to the grey skies of Normandy tomorrow so will be free to concentrate on later rounds of Rome and will be glued to RG.

So glad ed :) Friends just back from Normandy report blue skies and warmer than UK, which wouldn't be difficult mind you, as we are having a godawful Spring :(

Belated birthday wishes to Andy and congrats for the win. What a fabulous match it was and they both played great tennis. I love to watch Nalbandian playing well as he is a real master of the game IMO.

Nice to hear that you are feeling better ed.

Ola Ed, why are you limping if I may ask?

Twinge , 5/16/12 2:47 PM

Oh Twinge you've obviously missed the news that ed was in a terrible road accident around Xmas. :(

deuce , 5/16/12 3:13 PM

^^^ F**k me!
maybe Ed should consider taking up another hobby than Nascar racing deucey, leave that kind of thing to the young uns.
Levity aside i'm glad she is recovered :-)
