  • Ferrer first to Rome semifinals

    5/18/12 2:55 PM | Cheryl Murray
David Ferrer ousted Frenchman Richard Gasquet to earn a spot in Saturday’s semifinals.

For the first set and a bit of the second, Richard Gasquet was a threat in this match. The Frenchman played well enough to force a first set tiebreaker, capitalizing on some loose points from Ferrer to earn the break back after going down 4-2.

But it was the Spaniard, with his trademark solid baseline play, that came up with the goods in the breaker. Gasquet earned the first mini-break, but Ferrer fought back, earned the mini-break back and then secured another to take the one-set lead.

Gasquet made one more push in the second set. The underdog broke Ferrer in his first service game of the match, but the lead lasted only until Gasquet served to consolidate the lead. Excellent returning from Ferrer gave the Spaniard the break back and from then on, it was all business for the world No. 6.

Ferrer awaits the winner of Rafael Nadal and Tomas Berdych in the semis.
