  • Nadal upends Ferrer, into Rome final

    5/19/12 8:20 PM | Cheryl Murray
After putting up a fierce fight in the opening set, David Ferrer collapsed in the second, sending Rafael Nadal into the Rome final. The world No. 3 won 7-6(6), 6-0.

The first set of this semifinal was a dramatic affair filled with break-point chances earned and missed on the part of David Ferrer. The world No. 6, who hasn’t beaten Rafael Nadal on clay since 2004, had a whopping 10 break point chances in the set.

Ferrer actually drew first blood in the match. The Spanish No. 2 broke his countryman, taking advantage of Nadal’s attackable first serve. But Nadal held steady and earned himself a break point in Ferrer’s next service game. It would be the No. 2 seed’s only chance to break in the set, but he proved opportunistic and snagged it.

The tiebreaker was another close affair, with Ferrer gaining the first advantage only to give it right back again. Nadal, who showed some spotty tennis throughout the set, was solid when it mattered and secured the first set.

After the missed chances, Ferrer simply fell apart. He didn’t win another game, as Nadal dished out a second-set bagel to earn his spot in Sunday’s final.

Why no doubt? Nobody can be sure, it depends on which Rafa turns up to play. The one against Berdych? Then Nole has no chance, otherwise it's a tough call. Rafa certainly won't play like Fed who was an easy victim for Nole.

We just have to ignore those who come on here and act like all they have to do is say it and it will happen. It's up to the players. Some seem to forget that this is a very different Rafa from the one Nole played in the final last year. He is playing so much better this year.

I do expect it to be a real match, not the one-sided contest we saw with Fed playing Nole. Both Rafa and Nole want this title and will go out there and give it their all.

Rafa's comment about Madrid "clay" in his poste match presser:

"...... ? for me, we forget about Madrid because that was not clay ? my feelings on clay were fantastic all the time so for me it's been an almost perfect clay-court season."
