  • Ferrer dispatches Simon to move into the quarters

    5/17/12 3:33 PM | Cheryl Murray
David Ferrer dished out a first-set bagel to Frenchman Gilles Simon in his straight-set Wednesday win to move into the Rome quarterfinals.

The first set of this third-round encounter was a complete rout. Spanish world No. 6 David Ferrer completely dominated in all parts of the game. Simon did not earn even a whiff at a break point and he was broken on his own serve on all three tries. Ferrer won all but nine points for the entire set.

The second set was far more dramatic, though it featured some incredibly messy tennis from both men. The set remained on serve until the seventh game on Ferrer’s serve. The Spaniard donated a couple of sloppy errors to the Simon cause to give the Frenchman three break points. Ferrer saved the first, but Simon converted at 15-40 to take the lead.

Unfortunately for the Frenchman, the lead did not last long. Simon held for 5-3, but Ferrer pushed the set to 5-4, forcing Simon to serve out the set. He was unable to do so, and the next two games turned into a comedy of errors.

Ferrer played a dismal service game at 5-5, gift-wrapping the service break and once again giving Simon the chance to serve out the set. Not to be outdone, Simon took his own turn at poor play, getting broken at love in a completely lackluster push for the set.

Ferrer finally managed to string a few good points together in the tiebreaker to close out the match in straight sets. He awaits the winner of Andy Murray and Richard Gasquet in the quarters.
