  • Ferrer defeats Verdasco, moves into Rome third round

    5/15/12 2:34 PM | Cheryl Murray
David Ferrer secured his eighth career win over Spanish countryman Fernando Verdasco in the Rome second round, winning 6-3, 7-6(3).

This was a bit of a sloppy match from both men, with a host of unforced errors littering the stat sheet. Fernando Verdasco, ranked 16th in the world, drew first blood in the match. He secured a break of serve in Ferrer’s first service game to take a 2-0 lead, but the rest of the set was a disaster for him. Ferrer came back to win six of the next seven games and secured the one-set lead.

Verdasco was more competitive in the second set, but that was more an indication of Ferrer’s level dropping than Verdasco playing better. The two men trade breaks of serve and Verdasco was able to force the tiebreaker, but it was Ferrer who was the better player in the end.

The win sends Ferrer into the round of 16.
