  • Tomic fights past Giraldo for second round spot

    5/14/12 10:16 PM | Cheryl Murray
Aussie teen Bernard Tomic came back from a first set deficit to defeat Santiago Giraldo in the Rome Masters opening round.

Bernard Tomic did not start out well on the Rome clay in his Monday match. The Aussie seemed a bit slow to get to the ball, which allowed Santiago Giraldo to dictate play.

Giraldo did not face any break points in the opening set en route to a 6-4 lead. Tomic did some problem solving to get his footing back, however. The world No. 32 used his on-court guile to draw Giraldo from his comfortable baseline game, giving the Colombian looks at drop shops and off-pace shots.

The tactic worked. Giraldo lost his momentum bit by bit and eventually, Tomic took over control of the match. The Aussie nabbed the second and third sets relatively comfortably.

Tomic will take on world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the second round.
