Gilles Simon, the man who took out world number one Roger Federer, took on big hitting Marin Cilic in the first quarterfinal of the day on Friday.
Though competitve and close, the Marin Cilic-Gilles Simon quarterfinal was rife with errors from both men, but particularly from Cilic who could not seem to find his range on either wing. His forehands landed short, he shanked his backhand far too often and his unforced error count climbed into the sixties for the match.
Simon did what he does best. He was patient and he spent most of the match soaking up the pace from Cilic. This is an effective strategy against a hard hitter like the Croat because he feeds off hard hitting, which Simon did not provide.
Cilic was able to win the first set, staving off four break points along the way and breaking Simon once for a 6-3 lead. After that point, however the Croat’s game began to fall apart on a large scale. In the second set, his first serve percentage hovered around 50%, but in the third it dipped to 27%. Simon was happy to take advantage and closed out the encounter in three as he advanced to his first ever Masters-Series semifinal. He will play the hard hitting German Nicolas Keifer.
