In the marquee semifinal match on Saturday night, Rafael Nadal took on the inspired Scotsman Andy Murray in front of a pack house.
Rafael Nadal came into the semifinals with a twenty-nine match win streak dating back to Hamburg in May. He holds two of the three Grand Slam titles this year and the Masters-Series events in Hamburg and Monte Carlo. He had amassed a 4-0 record over Andy Murray since last year.
Murray started off the match playing well. He served aggressively, and found great range and angles from the backhand side. Murray and Nadal went toe to toe through the entire set. Neither man blinked on his own serve, as the set concluded without a single break. A tiebreaker was played to decide the set and for the first time in the match, Nadal emerged as the front-runner. At 2-5, Murray double faulted to give the lead to Nadal.
Murray made a push in the second set to dent the Nadal serve. In the first game of the set, the Scot got his first break point, only to have Nadal hit a gutsy drop shot winner. An error from Nadal set up another break point, but Nadal smacked a big first serve to get himself out of trouble. Nadal needed another four game points to finally hold. Nadal broke the Scotsman’s game in the third game of the set, but Murray broke back immediately in the next game. The Spaniard lost concentration after getting a time violation from chair umpire Cedric Mourier and double faulting on break point.
Nadal got another opportunity in the seventh game of the set and made no mistake in converting. He will play Nicolas Kiefer in Sunday’s final.
This was a highly competitive match and Andy Murray played an excellent match for a set and a half.
There was not really much wrong with this match. Both men fought hard - it was quite entertaining.

Did you know that... Thomas Johansson did not have to face any of the top-10 players when he won the Australian Open in 2002.
