Andy Murray attemtped to reserve a spot in the semifinals on Friday night in the first of two blockbuster quarterfinals under the lights.
The top seeds continued to struggle in Canada as inspired number eight seed Andy Murray ousted Novak Djokovic in straight sets. The Serb made some uncharacteristic errors throughout the match. He sprayed both forehand and backhand errors with some frequency; the Scot was smart and patient enough to take full advantage.
Murray broke Djokovic’s game immediately in the first set; he had the Serb down 0-40, and converted at 15-40. Murray appeared to get a little tight in the next service game. The Scot made a handful of errors to give Djokovic a break point, but he fought his way back to deuce with a good first serve, followed by a volley winner. A return error from Djokovic gave Murray the hold. From that point on, Murray played a clean first set and held onto the break for 6-3.
The first game of the second set featured some fantastic tennis from Murray. His foot speed, which is often underestimated, was on full display at 30-15. He made a brilliant forehand off what would have been a winner for Djokovic against most other players. Murray surprised the Serb by getting the ball back in play and the Scot won the point for his efforts. Two points later, Djokovic sent a volley wide to give Murray another break.
Djokovic made an attempt at a comeback at 4-3, breaking Murray’s game at love and leveling the set for the first time. As it turns out, Djokovic was merely putting off the inevitable. The Serb played a dreadful tiebreak and Murray posted his first ever win over his Serbian contemporary. Murray will play Rafael Nadal for a spot in the final in Saturday’s marquee match.
Murray played some outstanding tennis and fully deserved the victory.
Djokovic once again failed to defend a title and his hardcourt form is coming into question a bit.
