Tommy Haas upsets the hottest player on tour at the moment and recent Dubai champ in Andy Roddick 6-4, 6-4
Coming into this match, Roddick had won two events and took out both Djokovic and Nadal in Dubai in straight sets en route to the title. Haas has been coming back from a shoulder injury and his form has been deplorable at best.
So of course, Haas beats Roddick in straight sets and continues the 2008 ATP mantra of “anything can happen”.
Haas has had Roddick's number in the past, leading their all time head to head 6-3, now 7-3. Last year, in the Memphis event's final, Haas destroyed Roddick and made him look like a Future's player.
In this match, Haas showed the form he showed in the past 2 sets in his opening round match against Benneteau and played very well. He served very well throughout the match and dominated the baseline rallies. He played an extremely smart match, taking advantage of Roddick's sub-par movement skills by running the American all around the court and finishing points off at the net. Haas really showed off his brilliant all-court game in this match.
Andy, however, had a different story of the match. Roddick's usually unbreakable serve showed signs of fallacy in this match. He only served at a pedestrian 54% of first serves in and the 2nd serve points were hotly contested. Roddick only face 2 break points in this match, but Haas took both of them. A bit of a mental hiccup by the German as he tried to close out the match, but he got it done on a net cord on match point.
Haas will played either Verdasco or Hanescu in the next round.
Great display from Haas in this match as he proves he still has something left in his after this latest injury.
Roddick disappoints after a fantastic week in Dubai. Can he pick it up in Miami? Because we know he won't be doing any damage in the clay season.
