Marin Cilic secured his fourth straight-set victory of the week to see off Jurgen Melzer in the semifinals of the Zagreb Indoors on Saturday.
No. 1 seeded Marin Cilic remains on course to defend his Zagreb title after he defeated Jurgen Melzer 7-6(5), 6-4 to reach the final
Both players struggled to find their best form in an edgy opening frame of play. After the first six games of the set easily went with serve, Cilic found himself in a 0-40 hole. The Croat produced some powerful hitting to get back to deuce, but a forehand winner down the line from Melzer on his fourth break chance allowed him to forge ahead.
The Austrian’s lead did not last long, however, and he double-faulted on break point down to allow Cilic back into the set. Although Melzer had two more opportunities to break in the next game, Cilic came through unscathed and a tiebreak was needed to decide the outcome of the set.
Melzer opened up a 2-0 lead in the 'breaker, but he pushed a groundstroke wide to surrender the mini-break. Cilic then won another point against the Austrian’s serve with a big forehand to lead 4-2. Melzer fought off two set points with a pair of aces, but Cilic responded with a big first delivery of his own to clinch the set.
Following a tense opening set, Cilic quickly took control of the second frame of play. The world No. 10 hit a backhand return winner to break in the first game of the set. Despite receiving treatment for a back injury, Melzer successfully negotiated his way through his next four service games. Cilic, however, showed no signs of nerves and he held to love while serving for the contest at 5-4.
Cilic, who hit seven aces to one double-fault, needed one hour and 49 minutes to claim victory. He will play Michael Berrer in Sunday's final after the German defeated compatriot Philipp Petzschner in straight set.
