If he continues in this vein of form it won’t be long before Mario Ancic is back in the top 20. The 23 year old is battling to regain his place in the world’s elite after two injury afflicted seasons and he’s been taking full advantage of the favourable surfaces on the European indoor circuit in the past few weeks, proving virtually unstoppable.
Zagreb is Croatia’s only indoor ATP and the title is a notable omission on Ancic’s otherwise impressive tennis CV. He moved one step closer to rectifying that today, beating Robin Haase 6-3, 3-6, 6-3
Ancic controlled the first set from the start, breaking for a 2-0 lead, serving with the usual panache and dominating from the back. However, Haase wasn’t going quietly, after an unusually passive display in set 1 he took the game to the Croatian in the second, going for the big shots. He unsettled Ancic, cleverly mixing up his game with net charges and was rewarded with 2 breaks.
Haase had the chances in the early stages of the 3rd, Ancic going 0-30 down at 2-2. However, Ancic’s experience told, he pulled it back and then broke in the next game before wrapping up a place in the last 4
Speaking afterwards Ancic had plenty of praise for his opponent; “He proved today why he is among the best young players in the world. I had to play my best tennis to win the match.“
