Serbian qualifier Victor Troicki secured one of the biggest wins of his blossoming career, downing 4th seed Ivan Ljubicic 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(5)
Troicki beat a below-par Novak Djokovic on clay last summer but this was possibly a greater achievement against the fully fired-up defending champion. He fully deserved his victory and although he came from behind he had all the chances in the match. The Serb could have been forgiven for thinking it just wasn't meant to be as he let10 break points slip by
Ljubicic will be ruing letting a 3-0 lead slip in the decisive tiebreak. It was a microcosm of his year to date, flashes of brilliance (he made the Zagreb final and the Doha semis) but no great substance or consistency. He did well in Roland Garros after showing no real form in the warm-up tournaments and will be hoping the same proves true at Wimbledon next week
“I didn't play well at all and was struggling during the whole match,” said Ljubicic. “I thought I would have a chance in the tie-break of the third set, since I was serving well, but then again I couldn't find solutions. It's difficult to play against him, I didn't manage to find a rhythm.”
2001 runner-up Guillermo Canas moves into the quarters with a 6-2, 6-4 win over big serving Indian qualifier Rohan Bopanna. Bopanna would surely be a lot higher if he'd been in a different era as his game is tailor-made for grass, not something which can be said of Canas' counter-punching

Did you know that... Guillermo Vilas won 46 consecutive matches during 1977.
