Richard Gasquet suffered a blow in his Wimbledon preparations, falling 7-5, 7-6(5) to the hard serving Marc Gicquel.
Gasquet is now in danger of slipping out of the top 10 having made the Nottingham quarters last year. The pressure’s really on the Frenchman now with semi-final points to defend at SW19. With a previous 3-0 winning record over Gicquel, Gasquet would have approached this match with confidence but he paid for not converting any of 7 break point chances
There was another upset when Jurgen Melzer took out 5th seed Igor Andreev 6-4, 1-6, 6-1. The hard-hitting Austrain now leads Andreev 3-0 in the head-to-heads but this result isn’t too much of a surprise, Melzer’s heavy forehand and volleying ability translates well to grass while Andreev’s huge swings means he’s always going to struggle more on grass
However top seed David Ferrer avoided making it a trio of upsets beating Italian qualifier Massimo Dell’Acqua 6-2, 7-6(3). Although a clay-courter by trade, Ferrer has worked hard on his game for the faster surfaces and has made the last 16 at Wimbledon
Mario Ancic is the dark horse in the draw and he cruised past Belgium's Steve Darcis 6-2, 6-4
