David Ferrer's never really been renowned for his grass-court prowess but that could change in the next few weeks if he maintains this form. On Thursday he edged out 6th seed and 2-time former champion Mario Ancic 6-4, 7-6(4)
Ferrer was helped by very consistent serving, he made 71% first serves and as a result only needed to save 1 break point. Ancic has had better days. It needed to be a big performance against one of the best returners in the game and he didn't quite deliver. 4 aces is quite a low tally for him, and he wasn't able to get another cheap points, struggling particularly on 2nd serve.
Ancic managed to stave off 5/6 break points but Ferrer made that crucial (and it proved to be the only) breakthrough to go 3-2 up in set 1.
Speaking afterwards Ferrer said “It was my best match in the torunament and Mario is very tough to play on grass. I played really well today”
He's never been past the last 16 at SW19 but as 5th seed this year he has every opportunity and at that stage he'd be likely to face Roger Federer
